Sustainable Landscape Solutions: Woody Meadows bringing new life into industrial & logistics facilities

As a business, we remain committed to continually looking at new ways to improve environments for customers across our network while promoting sustainability. Through a partnership with the University of Melbourne, we have introduced the concept of Woody Meadows across a number of our sites. This is an initiative that uses naturalistic plantings of Australian shrubs to create attractive, low-maintenance landscapes with significant environmental benefits. These plantings not only enhance biodiversity but also reduce the need for intensive maintenance, making them ideal for industrial and logistics environments.

Under our partnership, we have collaborated with the University on planning, designing, and installing Woody Meadows at select ESR properties across Melbourne. The project’s pilot site, located in Epping, was planted with an initial batch of native flowering shrubs and has shown promising results since its installation in late 2023. These results have paved the way for an expanded trial across two additional sites, one in Laverton North and another in Dandenong South.

Woody Meadows installations offer numerous advantages, creating unique, enjoyable spaces that enhance the customer experience while supporting our sustainability objectives. With ongoing monitoring and evaluation by the University team, we are gaining insights that will inform future stages of the project with the potential to be rolled-out across a larger portion of our portfolio and hopefully set a standard for environmentally conscious planting in the industrial and logistics sector.
